ABOUT US
The ICI Young Chemists’ Network is the young division of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland and represents the interests of all young chemists and postgraduate scholars in Ireland. A sub-committee of the ICI Council oversees all the activities and membership of the YCN.
The aim of the YCN is to promote engagement and collaboration amongst early stage researchers in Ireland by organising conferences and networking events open to young chemists. The YCN also aims to support its members by providing a platform to promote upcoming positions and opportunities open to young researchers in Ireland across various fields of chemistry.
The ICI YCN Committee 2024/25
The ICI YCN Committee is made up of 16 members from all over the Island of Ireland from various backgrounds and institutions, and is chaired by Aaron McCormack, the ICI Young Chemists’ Representative. ICI Young Chemists’ Network at 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress
Members of the ICI Young Chemists’ Network had the opportunity to gather at the 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress held in Dublin last month. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet colleagues from the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN) and chemists from across the globe. Two of our committee members, Francesca Adami (UCD) and Aaron McCormack (UG), were invited to represent the ICI YCN at a reception for Chemistry Europe Fellows. This gathering was held in the amazing Irish Emigration Museum on Monday evening during the congress.

Chemistry Photo Competition
DECEMBER, 2021
A Chemistry Photo Competition was held during the month of December for the best photo that includes any aspect of Chemistry. Many entries were received and the winner was decided by a social media vote. Both the winner and runner-up were from Trinity College Dublin.
Careers Event
THURSDAY 25TH NOVEMBER, 2021
On the 27th November 2021, the first Careers’ event was held for the ICI Young Chemists’ Network where four early career science professionals shared their insights from their own careers, along with useful presentations from a representative from recruiters Collins McNicholas and Maynooth University Careers Service.
ICI Congress 2021 (Co-hosts)
THURSDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER, 2021
On the 30th November 2021, the ICI Young Chemists’ Network co-hosted the ICI Congress along with Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. The ICI YCN was responsible for the afternoon session which targeted younger chemists early in their career. This session involved a representative from Thornshaw Recruitment who spoke to attendees on ‘Building Your Career’ followed by two academics who discussed ‘Tips for Early Career Researchers’. A networking session followed with the attendees and the second concluded with a panel discussion with former ICI Postgraduate Awardees.
ICI YCN Summer Event
THURSDAY 29TH JULY, 2021
On the 29th July 2021, the ICI YCN Summer event took place which consisted of two parts. The first was an International Researchers Forum with the head of Euraxess Ireland, discussing important aspects of being an international researcher in Ireland, and answering all the questions from the attendees. The second part of the event consisted of a YCN Quiz with prizes for the winning team.
FIRST MEETING
WEDNESDAY 27TH JANUARY, 2021
On January 27th 2021 at 6 pm, we had our inaugural meeting as the ICI Young Chemists’ Network where the theme was “Build Your Community”.
In addition to this, we also had an Escape Room Challenge.
